Jotus sp. L. Koch, 1881 A Jotus sp.

An agile, small jumping spider found on the ground, on low foliage and in leaf litter in heavily to sparsely vegetated areas in coastal eastern Australia north of Coffs Harbour. Active in autumn and winter when it is often found inside or on the outsides of houses and other built structures. The male is has short white socks on the front legs and broad white bands running down both sides of the abdomen, the sides of the cephalothorax also fringed with white. The front legs of the male also have a fringe of black hairs on the tibia. In both males and females there are prominent white bands on the rear sides of the cephalothorax (along the edge from about midway towards the rear). The male palp has a two ended embolus, a bulging face and a prominent posterior lobe. The female has been determined by proximity to males and exclusion of other species. The blue eyes are visible with the naked eye. The genus Jotus was reinstated in 1989 by Davies & Zabka, after being synonymised with Lycidas by Zabka in 1987. ♀ 6mm ♂ 4mm
