Hypoblemum griseum (Keyserling, 1882)

Common in Queensland, New South Wales and most of New Zealand south to Christchurch, often seen around built up areas on walls and fences during the warmer part of the day. Known as 'House Hopper' it is among the most obvious and encountered spiders on NZ's North Island. It is a very mobile spider quick to jump. The male is brown with a mat of forward-pointing orange to bright red hairs on the front of the head, obvious from facing shots. The male has distinctively longer and fringed legs III, which it may use in courtship display. The forward facing fringing is black and the rearward facing fringing is white. The legs III are heavily armed with spines. There is a patchy white garland high on the rear of the head of the male, and white lines from the garland to the perimeter of the head at the back, rather like arched windows. The abdomen is very shaggy, with a white spot at the rear. The pedipalps have quite a lot of white hairs from the femurs to the tibiae, rather like Joel Garner's sweatbands. A darker stripe runs lengthways down the upper surface of the abdomen. The head of the male appears depressed or sunken in the middle, obvious in some photos. The female also has a white garland (the meaning of albovittatum) around the crown of the head at the rear and usually a uniformly grey or somewhat mottled abdomen.
