PYCNOTHELIDAE Stanwellia

Stanwellia is the only Australian genus in the family Pycnothelidae. It is very common in Victoria and also found other southern Australian states and islands. Stanwellia is a genus of large and common ground-dwelling spiders often encountered by gardeners digging soil or moving rocks, sometimes misidentified as a Sydney Funnelweb Spider (which only occurs in NSW). They make silk-lined burrows without a trapdoor up to 40 cm deep in soft earth. The venom is not known to cause medical problems. ♀ 35 mm ♂ 25 mm
