Astilodes mariae Zabka, 2009

Face

A new genus from Queensland recently described by Dr Marek Zabka. This specimen about 10mm long with a very skinny abdomen and long front legs. This specimen observed On Obi Obi Creek near Kenilworth. Body slender and elongate, first legs much longer and thicker than others, tibiae and metatarsi with distinctive spines. A plurident spider, having many teeth on the chelicerae. The generic name doesn't mean anything in particular but suggests the possible relationships with Australasian Astieae especially Sondra. The group Astieae presently includes eight Australasian genera: Astia L. Koch, Arasia Simon, Helpis Simon, Adoxotoma Simon, Jacksonoides Wanless, Megaloastia Żabka, Sondra Wanless and Tauala Wanless. The latter four genera are known exclusively from Australia. The specific name is in honour of Marek Zabka's daughter Maria.
