Atracidae has some of Australia's medically important funnelweb spiders. Its three genera Atrax, Hadronyche and Illawarra were recently separated from the sister family Hexathelidae. The well known Sydney Funnel-web Spider Atrax robustus is considered by some authorities to be the world's most dangerous spider.
