ARANEIDAE Orb weavers

Araneids are known as orb weavers and most do indeed build the classic orb webs but there are many exceptions. Most in the subfamily Araneinae build orb webs as do those in Argiopinae. Other subfamilies, like Arciinae and Mastophorinae use other strategies including ambush or sticky single strands. When people imagine a spider most have in mind an orb weaver of some kind, usually with a fairly large web, at least one metre in diameter, with the spider waiting at the centre.
